Stop the water if you can safely reach the correct shutoff. For a leak at one fixture, use that fixture’s shutoff valve. For a burst pipe, a hidden leak or water you cannot isolate, turn off the home’s main water supply. Keep away from standing water near outlets, appliances or electrical equipment.

Look for the house shutoff where the water line enters your home. Depending on the home, it may be in a utility area, garage, water-heater closet or at a plumbing manifold—a panel where several water lines connect. Some homes have a main shutoff under a sink, but most valves under sinks control only that faucet. A valve above the water heater usually shuts off only the heater’s supply.

If you cannot locate the house shutoff, your home may have a customer shutoff near the water meter, often in the front yard near the street. Use it only if you can clearly identify it and your utility allows it. Do not force a stuck valve or operate the city water main. Call your water utility for an emergency shutoff if you are unsure, and call Amped for help locating and repairing the leak.

Do not flush again. If the bowl is rising, gently close the toilet’s water-supply valve, usually behind or beside the toilet near the floor. Do not force it if it is stuck. Keep children and pets away from spilled wastewater.

If only that toilet is affected and the water level has settled, try a toilet plunger with a flange, starting gently to avoid splashing. Do not add chemical drain cleaner or boiling water. If drain chemicals have already been added, do not plunge; tell the plumber what was used.

If the clog will not clear, keeps returning, or water backs up in a tub, shower or another toilet, stop using water throughout the home and call Amped. Multiple affected drains can indicate a main sewer blockage.

Keep clear of hot water and wet electrical equipment. If you can reach a dry electrical panel safely, switch off the breaker for an electric water heater. For a gas water heater, follow the unit’s labeled shutdown instructions only if you can do so safely and there is no gas smell.

Close the cold-water supply valve feeding the tank if it is accessible and you can identify it. If you cannot isolate the leak, use the home’s main water shutoff or request help. The tank may continue leaking water already inside it. Do not drain the tank, remove covers or plug a relief-valve discharge pipe. Call Amped to inspect the source before restarting the heater.

Smell gas? Leave the building immediately. Do not operate switches, use a phone inside or try to light the heater. From outside and away from the building, call your gas utility’s emergency line or 911.

Check whether the problem affects one faucet or every hot-water fixture. If there is no leak, gas smell or other warning sign, note any error code or blinking light visible on the heater without removing a cover. If several people just used hot water, the tank may need time to recover.
